About this display

Display your U.S. coins alongside Standing Liberty, one of the most distinctive figures in early 20th-century American coinage.

This coin display is inspired by Hermon A. MacNeil’s original Type I Standing Liberty Quarter, introduced in 1916. The figure recreates the classical appearance of Liberty with her shield, flowing drapery and original exposed-breast design, while the hand that traditionally carries the olive branch has been adapted into a platform for displaying a coin.

Rather than placing a coin on a generic stand, Aurea Displays connects the coin with the history, artwork and symbolism of American numismatics.

THE ORIGINAL TYPE I STANDING LIBERTY

The Standing Liberty Quarter was introduced by the United States Mint in 1916 and remained in production until 1930. MacNeil depicted Liberty stepping forward through an opening, carrying a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, combining the ideas of protection and peace.

The original Type I design of 1916 and early 1917 depicted Liberty with her right breast exposed, following the classical artistic tradition that influenced much of the coinage of this period.

During 1917, the design was revised and Liberty’s exposed breast was covered with a coat of chain mail. The reason for the change has long been debated by numismatic historians. Older accounts associated it with objections to the partial nudity, while later research has also connected the change with symbolism surrounding the United States entering the First World War.

This figure is intentionally based on the earlier Type I interpretation and preserves the exposed-breast design.

COIN COMPATIBILITY

The holder has been physically tested with the main standard U.S. coin denominations and is designed to accommodate a wide range of American coins with different diameters and thicknesses.

It works particularly well with:

  • cents
  • dimes
  • nickels
  • quarters
  • half dollars
  • smaller U.S. dollar coins

Large U.S. dollars such as the Eisenhower Dollar, approximately 38.1 mm in diameter, will also fit. However, I recommend using a smaller coin where possible because a coin of this size covers a noticeable portion of the figure.

Half dollars, quarters and smaller dollar coins provide particularly good proportions, allowing the coin to remain prominent without obscuring too much of the sculpture.

You may also provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the optional personalization field for additional fit certainty, particularly when displaying an older, unusual or non-standard coin.

HISTORICALLY INSPIRED DESIGN

The sculpture is based on the original Standing Liberty coin artwork and surviving representations of MacNeil’s design rather than being a generic representation of Lady Liberty.

Details such as the shield, classical drapery, exposed breast and forward-moving pose have been retained to preserve the character of the original Type I design.

The olive-branch hand has been adapted into the coin holder, allowing the coin itself to become part of the composition while keeping the recognizable appearance of Standing Liberty.

MADE FOR COIN COLLECTORS

The coin rests naturally on the integrated platform rather than being glued, clamped or permanently attached.

Each display is 3D printed in PLA, allowing the folds of Liberty’s clothing, shield and other sculptural details to remain visible at a compact display size.

The idea is to turn an individual coin into a small historical presentation, connecting the physical coin with the artwork and numismatic history surrounding it.

PLEASE NOTE

The coin shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.

Coin dimensions can vary between different denominations, dates and historical issues. If you would like additional fit certainty, please provide the diameter and thickness of the coin you intend to display when ordering.

This listing depicts the Type I Standing Liberty design with an exposed breast. This feature is intentional and reflects the original artistic interpretation on which the sculpture is based.
