About this display
Buffalo nickel bison coin display, a unique coin holder for your Buffalo nickel or other small U.S. coins. Inspired by James Earle Fraser's American bison, it is a distinctive gift for coin collectors and lovers of the American West.
Tens of millions of bison once crossed the Great Plains. By the end of the nineteenth century hunting had left only a few hundred in the wild, and Americans began to fight to save the animal that had come to stand for the frontier.
In 1913, as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's push to make American coins works of art, sculptor James Earle Fraser was asked to design a new five-cent piece. He had grown up on the Dakota frontier, and he chose the bison for the reverse. Tradition says his model was Black Diamond, a bison living at the Central Park Zoo in New York. On the obverse he placed a Native American portrait, so that one small coin told the story of the West.
The Buffalo nickel, also called the Indian Head nickel, was struck from 1913 to 1938. This display brings Fraser's bison off the coin and gives your nickel a place of honour beside it, so the coin and its story can be shown together.
Buffalo nickels measure about 21.2 mm. The holder can be tailored to the diameter and thickness of your own coin, including other small U.S. coins.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
The coin is not included. Please provide the diameter and thickness of the coin you intend to display.
