About this display

Display your gold sovereign alongside a sculpture of St George slaying the dragon, with an integrated platform for the coin.

This coin display is a full three-dimensional reading of Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous reverse: St George on a rearing horse, plumed helmet and cloak streaming behind him, sword raised as the dragon writhes beneath the hooves. A coin platform sits on the rocky ground in front of the group so a sovereign becomes part of the scene.

Aurea Displays connects the physical coin with the artwork, symbolism and history behind the reverse that has defined the British gold sovereign since 1817.

ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON

Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon first appeared on the 1817 sovereign and has returned on sovereigns, crowns and later gold issues ever since. George, helmeted and cloaked, rides over the fallen dragon — the image of England’s patron saint that collectors know from the gold sovereign.

A sovereign measures about 22.05 mm. Crowns and other large British coins using the same reverse can also be displayed when their diameter and thickness are supplied.

This sculpture uses Pistrucci’s reverse as the starting point for a full sculptural group. The charged horse, flying cloak, plumed helmet and dragon are an artistic interpretation created to complement the gold sovereign type.

DESIGNED FOR GOLD SOVEREIGNS

This display is particularly suited to pairing a gold sovereign, a crown, or another British coin with Pistrucci’s St George reverse.

The holder can be tailored to your coin’s diameter and thickness.

Please provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the personalization field so the holder can be adapted to your chosen coin.

HISTORICALLY INSPIRED DESIGN

The rider, rearing horse and dragon follow Pistrucci’s St George type known from the sovereign.

It is an artistic interpretation, not an official Royal Mint product.
