This coin display presents Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous reverse: St George on a rearing horse, helmeted, striking down the dragon. A coin platform sits on the base beside the group so the piece becomes part of the composition.

ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON

Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon first appeared on the 1817 sovereign and has returned on sovereigns, crowns and later gold issues ever since. George, bare-chested and helmeted, rides right over the fallen dragon.

A sovereign measures about 22.05 mm. Crowns and other large British coins using the same reverse can also be displayed when their diameter and thickness are supplied.

This sculpture uses Pistrucci’s reverse as the starting point for a full three-dimensional group. The horse, dragon and rider are an artistic interpretation created to complement the gold sovereign type.
