This coin display presents the seated Britannia familiar from Victorian, Edwardian and later pennies: crested helmet, trident in her left hand and a shield at her side. A coin platform sits on the base beside the figure so the piece becomes part of the composition.

THE SEATED BRITANNIA PENNY

Seated Britannia has appeared on English and British copper and bronze since 1672. The type collectors know from pennies of Victoria through Elizabeth II shows her helmeted, seated on a rock, holding a trident with a shield beside her.

A pre-decimal penny measures about 30.8 mm. Farthings, halfpennies and later fifty-pence Britannia types can also be displayed when their diameter and thickness are supplied.

This sculpture uses that penny reverse as the starting point for a full seated figure. The helmet, trident, shield and drapery are an artistic interpretation created to complement the circulating bronze type.
