About this display
Display your Liberty Head half eagle alongside a full-body sculptural interpretation of Lady Liberty inspired by the portrait on the five-dollar gold piece.
This coin display takes Christian Gobrecht’s Coronet Liberty and reimagines it as a seated three-dimensional figure, preserving recognizable elements from the coin such as her classical profile, coronet inscribed LIBERTY, beaded hair and gathered bun while extending the portrait into a complete classical sculpture.
The integrated coin platform is positioned in Liberty’s lap so that the coin becomes part of the composition rather than covering the figure.
Rather than displaying a five-dollar gold piece on a generic stand, Aurea Displays connects the physical coin with the artwork, symbolism and history behind one of America’s longest-running gold designs.
The Liberty Head, or Coronet, half eagle was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht and struck from 1839 to 1908.
Its obverse shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and surrounded by thirteen stars, with the date below. The reverse carries a heraldic eagle. An 1883 half eagle belongs to the later With Motto type, issued from 1866 to 1908, with IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle and the denomination written FIVE D.
Gobrecht’s Coronet portrait remained on the half eagle for nearly seventy years, spanning the Gold Rush, the Civil War and the early twentieth century. It is the only U.S. coin design struck at seven mints: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City and Denver. In 1908 it was replaced by Bela Lyon Pratt’s incuse Indian Head half eagle.
This sculpture uses that portrait as the starting point for a full-body interpretation of Liberty. Because the original coin only depicts her head and neck, the seated body, clothing and pose are a sculptural interpretation designed to complement the nineteenth-century style of the original numismatic artwork.
This display was designed especially with Liberty Head half eagles and other compact U.S. gold coins around 21.6 mm in diameter in mind.
The size and position of the coin holder were developed so that a five-dollar gold piece remains visually prominent in Liberty’s lap while not covering the main details of the sculpture.
While the proportions work particularly well with Liberty Head five-dollar gold pieces, including dates such as 1883 and the rest of the 1839–1908 series, the holder can also display many other U.S. coin sizes, including:
For this particular design, however, Liberty Head half eagles and similarly sized compact gold coins provide the best visual proportions.
You may provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the personalization field for additional fit certainty.
The head, coronet and hairstyle of the sculpture are based on the Liberty portrait created by Christian Gobrecht for the five-dollar gold piece.
Details from the original portrait have been translated into three dimensions, while the seated body and classical drapery complete the figure in a style intended to complement the nineteenth-century coin design.
It is an artistic interpretation, not an official U.S. Mint product.
The coin rests naturally on the integrated platform rather than being glued, clamped or permanently attached.
Particular attention was given to the placement of the holder so that a compact half eagle sits in Liberty’s lap as part of the seated composition, keeping both the coin and the sculpture clearly visible.
The result allows a Liberty Head five-dollar gold piece to become the focal point of the display while still keeping the figure unobstructed.
The photographs show the display with an empty coin platform. A coin is not included.
The stand works especially well with Liberty Head half eagles and other U.S. coins around 21.6 mm in diameter, but other small U.S. denominations can also be displayed.
Coin dimensions can vary between different types, dates and individual pieces. For additional fit certainty, please provide the diameter and thickness of the coin you intend to display when ordering.
