About this display
Display your U.S. coins alongside a full-body sculpture inspired by the Indian Princess Liberty on the three-dollar gold piece.
This coin display brings James B. Longacre’s feathered headdress Liberty into three dimensions. Liberty appears as an allegorical “Indian Princess,” wearing a crown of feathers with a LIBERTY band, extended here into a freestanding figure with an integrated coin platform.
Aurea Displays connects the physical coin with the artwork, symbolism and history behind one of America’s most distinctive nineteenth-century gold designs.
The three-dollar gold piece was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and struck from 1854 to 1889.
Its obverse shows Liberty as a Native American princess, facing left, wearing a feathered headdress with a band inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse carries Longacre’s agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco around the denomination.
A closely related portrait also appeared on Longacre’s Type II and Type III gold dollars. The three-dollar piece itself was authorized in 1853 and is remembered today as one of the more unusual denominations in U.S. gold coinage.
This sculpture preserves the recognizable Indian Princess portrait while extending it into a full-body interpretation. The pose and drapery are an artistic completion of a design that, on the coin, shows only Liberty’s head and headdress.
This display is particularly suited to pairing a three-dollar gold piece with the Indian Princess Liberty from its obverse.
Three-dollar gold coins measure about 20.5 mm. The holder can be tailored to your coin’s diameter and thickness. Other small-to-medium U.S. coins can also be accommodated, including gold dollars, cents, dimes and nickels.
Please provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the personalization field so the holder can be adapted to your chosen coin.
The head, feathered headdress and LIBERTY band of the sculpture are based on Longacre’s Indian Princess portrait for the three-dollar gold piece.
As the original coin depicts only the bust, the body, clothing and coin-holding pose are a sculptural interpretation created to complement the mid-nineteenth-century style of the original artwork.
It is an artistic interpretation, not an official U.S. Mint product.
The coin rests naturally on the integrated platform without being glued, clamped or permanently attached, making it easy to place and remove.
Pairing the sculpture with a three-dollar gold piece allows you to appreciate Longacre’s Indian Princess Liberty alongside its three-dimensional interpretation.
The coin shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.
Three-dollar gold pieces and similar-sized U.S. coins are the recommended choices for this design.
Coin dimensions vary between denominations and types. Please provide the diameter and thickness of the coin you intend to display when ordering.
