About this display
Display your Roman denarii alongside Faustina the Elder, Roman empress and wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius.
This custom coin display combines a historically researched representation of Faustina with made-to-fit holders designed around the diameter and thickness of your own ancient coins. Rather than displaying a Roman coin on a generic stand, Aurea Displays connects the coin with the historical figure and period behind it.
Faustina the Elder, also known as Faustina I or Faustina Major, was the wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius and mother of Faustina the Younger. She died early in her husband's reign and was subsequently deified by the Roman Senate. Antoninus Pius continued to commemorate her extensively on Roman coinage, resulting in the famous DIVA FAUSTINA issues that remain popular with ancient coin collectors today.
The figure is created using surviving busts, sculptures, ancient coin portraits and historical descriptions wherever these sources are available. The aim is to create a recognisable, historically informed representation rather than a generic Roman figure.
Because ancient coins vary considerably in diameter, thickness and shape, the coin holders can be tailored to the individual coins they are intended to display.
Please provide the diameter and thickness of each coin when ordering. Weight may also be provided but is not required for sizing.
The coins rest naturally in their holders rather than being glued, clamped or permanently attached. Each display is 3D printed in PLA, a lightweight and durable plant-based plastic commonly used for detailed display pieces. PLA provides a clean finish and allows the historical figure and coin holders to be produced with fine detail.
Each display is designed to turn an ancient coin into a small historical presentation, connecting the object with the person represented on it and the world in which it circulated.
Faustina's coinage offers an especially interesting connection between a historical person and the coins that survive today.
After her death, she was deified and commemorated extensively by Antoninus Pius. Many surviving coins bear the inscription DIVA FAUSTINA and feature reverse types associated with her deification, memory and imperial virtues.
Displaying a Faustina coin together with a representation of the empress creates a direct visual connection between the ancient object and the woman whose portrait appears on it.
Coins shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included.
Ancient coins are individually shaped and may not be perfectly round, so small variations in fit can occur even when two coins have the same nominal diameter.
Looking for another Roman emperor, empress or historical figure? Custom figures and different coin configurations can also be created for collectors looking for something specific.
