About this display

Display your Roman coins alongside a sculpture of Aeneas fleeing Troy — the reverse of Julius Caesar’s African-campaign denarius — with an integrated platform for the coin.

Aeneas strides over broken ground, his father Anchises on his shoulder and the Palladium raised in his right hand: the small armed figure of Minerva that Troy’s survivors carried from the burning city. A coin platform sits against Anchises so a denarius becomes part of the scene rather than sitting on a generic stand.

Aurea Displays connects the physical coin with the artwork, symbolism and history of Caesar’s claim to a divine ancestry.

VENUS, AENEAS AND CAESAR’S AFRICAN CAMPAIGN

After Caesar defeated Pompey at Pharsalus, the remaining Optimates who still meant to fight withdrew to Africa. Caesar followed them in December 47 BC, crossing with only six legions. A storm scattered his fleet; he fought on the defensive at Ruspina, then crushed the opposition at Thapsus on 6 April 46 BC.

The denarii that pay this sculpture were struck at a military mint travelling with Caesar on that campaign, to pay the soldiers. The type is Crawford 458/1: a diademed head of Venus on the obverse, and Aeneas advancing with Anchises and the Palladium on the reverse, CAESAR in the field.

The reverse is the escape from Troy. Aeneas carries his father and the city’s sacred image out of the sack — the same pietas Virgil later set at the heart of the Aeneid. The scene mattered to Caesar because the gens Julia claimed descent from Iulus, son of Aeneas. Aeneas himself was the son of Venus and Anchises. By putting Venus on the obverse and her son on the reverse, Caesar advertised not only heroic ancestry, but a line that ran back to a goddess.

A Republican denarius of this type measures about 18–19 mm. Other Roman silver and bronze of similar size can also be displayed when diameter and thickness are supplied.

This sculpture takes the coin reverse as the starting point for a full three-dimensional group. The stride, the cloak, Anchises and the Palladium are an artistic interpretation created to complement the African-campaign type.

DESIGNED FOR CAESAR’S AENEAS DENARIUS

This display is particularly suited to pairing a Crawford 458/1 Venus / Aeneas denarius with the scene from its reverse.

The holder can be tailored to your coin’s diameter and thickness. Other Roman Republican, Imperatorial or Imperial coins of similar size can also be accommodated.

Please provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the personalization field so the holder can be adapted to your chosen coin.

HISTORICALLY INSPIRED DESIGN

The grouping follows Caesar’s African-campaign reverse: Aeneas, Anchises and the Palladium.

It is an artistic interpretation, not a museum replica or official mint product.
