This coin display presents Britannia in a crested helmet, holding a trident and a Union Flag shield, the personification of Britain that has appeared on British coinage since the seventeenth century. A coin platform sits on the base in front of the figure so the piece becomes part of the composition.

BRITANNIA ON BRITISH COINAGE

Britannia first appeared on English copper coins under Charles II in 1672 and has returned on pennies, florins, fifty-pence pieces and bullion issues ever since.

The standing or seated figure with helmet, trident and shield is the type collectors recognise from Victorian and Edwardian pennies, later fifty-pence coins, and the modern Britannia bullion series. Pre-decimal pennies measure about 30.8 mm; many later circulating Britannia types are smaller.

This sculpture uses that coin type as the starting point for a full standing figure. The windblown drapery, helmet and Union Flag shield are an artistic interpretation created to complement the familiar coin image.
