About this display
Display your U.S. coins alongside a full-body sculpture inspired by the Liberty portrait on the three-cent nickel.
This coin display brings James B. Longacre’s Coronet Head Liberty into three dimensions. Liberty wears the studded coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the ribboned hairstyle familiar from the nickel three-cent piece, extended here into a classical freestanding figure with an integrated coin platform.
Aurea Displays connects the physical coin with the artwork, symbolism and history behind one of America’s more understated nineteenth-century Liberty portraits.
The three-cent nickel was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and struck from 1865 to 1889.
Its obverse shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet with the word LIBERTY and a ribbon binding her hair. The reverse carries a laurel wreath surrounding the Roman numeral III.
Longacre adapted a classical Liberty profile he had used across several mid-century coins, including the Indian Head cent, gold dollar and three-dollar piece, giving the three-cent nickel its distinctive coronet and hair treatment.
This sculpture preserves those recognizable portrait elements while extending the bust into a full-body interpretation. The pose and drapery are an artistic completion of a design that, on the coin, shows only Liberty’s head and neck.
This display is particularly suited to pairing a three-cent nickel with the Liberty portrait from its obverse.
The holder can be tailored to your coin’s diameter and thickness. Other small U.S. denominations can also be accommodated, including cents, dimes, nickels and similar-sized pieces.
Three-cent nickels measure about 17.9 mm. For this design, that scale and smaller circulating coins provide the best visual proportions.
Please provide your coin’s diameter and thickness in the personalization field so the holder can be adapted to your chosen coin.
The head, coronet and hair of the sculpture are based on Longacre’s Liberty portrait for the three-cent nickel.
As the original coin depicts only the bust, the body, clothing and coin-holding pose are a sculptural interpretation created to complement the mid-nineteenth-century style of the original artwork.
It is an artistic interpretation, not an official U.S. Mint product.
The coin rests naturally on the integrated platform without being glued, clamped or permanently attached, making it easy to place and remove.
Pairing the sculpture with a three-cent nickel allows you to appreciate Longacre’s coronet Liberty portrait alongside its three-dimensional interpretation.
The coin shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.
Three-cent nickels and other small U.S. coins are the recommended choices for this design.
Coin dimensions vary between denominations and types. Please provide the diameter and thickness of the coin you intend to display when ordering.
