About this display
Peace dollar Liberty bust inspired by Anthony de Francisci's portrait on the Peace silver dollar, the American coin created to celebrate the end of the First World War. A meaningful gift for silver dollar collectors and lovers of American history.
After the Great War, American coin collectors called for a coin to mark the return of peace. In 1921 the Commission of Fine Arts held a competition, and the winner was a young Italian-born sculptor living in New York, Anthony de Francisci. For the face of Liberty he used his wife, Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci, as his model. She had emigrated from Italy as a child, and her portrait became a symbol of the new, modern America.
The first Peace dollars were struck in December 1921 in high relief. The reverse carries the word PEACE, a quiet statement from a nation that had just come through the war. Production continued until 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935, making the Peace dollar the last circulating United States silver dollar struck in 90% silver. In 2021, for its centennial, the U.S. Mint issued the Peace dollar again for collectors.
This bust brings de Francisci's Liberty off the coin as a portrait sculpture, a reminder of the Roaring Twenties and of the hope that followed the First World War.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
