About this display

Mercury dime bust inspired by Adolph A. Weinman's Winged Liberty, one of the most beautiful American coin designs ever made. A thoughtful gift for coin collectors, numismatists and lovers of early twentieth-century American history.

THE STORY OF THE MERCURY DIME

In 1916 the U.S. Mint set out to make America's silver coins more beautiful. The dime went to Adolph A. Weinman, a German-born sculptor and student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who also designed the Walking Liberty half dollar in the same year.

Weinman's Liberty wears a winged cap, his symbol of liberty of thought. The public saw the wings and thought of the Roman god Mercury, and the name Mercury dime has stuck ever since, even though the coin officially shows Liberty. The model is widely believed to be Elsie Kachel Stevens, wife of the poet Wallace Stevens. On the reverse, a fasces and an olive branch stand for strength, unity and peace.

The Mercury dime was struck in 90% silver from 1916 to 1945. It was in American pockets through the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the Second World War, and was replaced by the Roosevelt dime in 1946. Key dates such as the 1916-D remain among the most wanted U.S. coins.

This bust brings Weinman's Winged Liberty off the coin as a portrait sculpture for your shelf or coin cabinet.
