About this display
Seated Liberty bust inspired by Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, the face of United States silver coinage for more than half a century. A classic gift for coin collectors, numismatists and anyone who loves American history.
In 1835 the U.S. Mint hired engraver Christian Gobrecht to give the young republic a new image of Liberty. Working from drawings by the painter Thomas Sully, he created Seated Liberty, which first appeared on the Gobrecht dollar of 1836. Within a few years she was on the half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar and silver dollar, and later the short-lived twenty-cent piece.
For decades Seated Liberty was the silver money of everyday America. These coins paid wages during the California Gold Rush, travelled west with the pioneers and changed hands on both sides of the Civil War. In 1866 the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the larger denominations. The design remained in use until 1891, when it gave way to the Barber coinage.
Today Seated Liberty dimes, quarters and half dollars are among the most collected nineteenth-century U.S. coins. This bust takes Gobrecht's Liberty off the coin and turns her into a portrait sculpture for your shelf, coin cabinet or study.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
