About this display
Morgan dollar Liberty bust inspired by George T. Morgan's portrait on the Morgan silver dollar, the legendary coin of the American Old West. A classic gift for silver dollar collectors, numismatists and lovers of American history.
In 1878 Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, ordering the Treasury to buy millions of dollars' worth of silver every month. Much of it came from the great mines of Nevada, such as the Comstock Lode. To coin all that silver, the U.S. Mint needed a new dollar, and the job went to George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver who had joined the Mint only two years before.
Morgan wanted a truly American Liberty, not a copy of a Greek goddess. His model was Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher who sat for him reluctantly and later refused to be famous for it. The wheat and cotton in Liberty's hair honour the farms of the North and South, a nation coming together again after the Civil War.
Morgan dollars were struck from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921 at Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Denver and the famous Carson City Mint with its CC mint mark. They crossed saloon tables and bank counters across the frontier and became the most collected silver dollar in America. In 2021 the U.S. Mint issued the Morgan dollar again for its centennial.
This bust takes Morgan's Liberty off the coin and turns her into a portrait sculpture for your shelf or coin cabinet.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
