About this display

Minerva bust, a classical sculpture of the Roman goddess of wisdom, strategy and the arts, known to the Greeks as Athena. A timeless gift for lovers of ancient history, Roman coins and classical art.

THE STORY OF MINERVA

Minerva was one of the three great gods of Rome, worshipped with Jupiter and Juno on the Capitoline Hill. She was the goddess of wisdom, of crafts and of strategy in war, and the Romans placed her helmeted portrait on denarii and bronze coins for centuries. Emperors such as Domitian made her their personal protector and filled their coinage with her image.

Her story did not end with Rome. Minerva became a symbol of learning in the libraries and universities of Europe, and the young United States adopted her too. She appears on the Great Seal of the State of California, adopted in 1849, and her helmeted head is at the centre of the Army Medal of Honor, the highest American award for valour.

This bust brings that long tradition into a modern portrait sculpture for a bookshelf, study or coin cabinet, a symbol of wisdom from the ancient world to today.
