About this display
Display your Roman coins alongside Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor, Stoic philosopher and one of the most recognisable rulers of the ancient world.
This custom coin display combines a historically researched representation of Marcus Aurelius with made-to-fit holders designed around the diameter and thickness of your own ancient coins. Rather than displaying a Roman coin on a generic stand, Aurea Displays connects the coin with the historical figure and period behind it. This coin is inspired by the full-size statue of the ruler from the greco-roman museum of Alexandria.
Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 161 to 180 and is remembered both for his leadership during a period of war and crisis and for his philosophical work, Meditations. His portrait appeared extensively on Roman imperial coinage throughout his reign, making him an especially fitting figure for collectors of Roman and Antonine coins.
The figure is created using surviving sculptures, ancient coin portraits and historical descriptions wherever these sources are available. The aim is to create a recognisable, historically informed representation rather than a generic or classical figure.
Because ancient coins vary considerably in diameter, thickness and shape, the coin holders can be tailored to the individual coins they are intended to display.
Please provide the diameter and thickness of each coin when ordering. Weight may also be provided but is not required for sizing.
The coins rest naturally in their holders rather than being glued, clamped or permanently attached. Each display is 3D printed in PLA, a lightweight and durable plant-based plastic commonly used for detailed display pieces. PLA provides a clean finish and allows the historical figure and coin holders to be produced with fine detail.
Each display is designed to turn an ancient coin into a small historical presentation, connecting the object with the person, culture and period behind it.
The reign of Marcus Aurelius represents one of the most important periods of the Roman Empire. His surviving coins document his changing portrait, imperial titles, military campaigns, family connections and the ideals promoted throughout his rule.
For collectors, displaying a Marcus Aurelius coin together with a representation of the emperor creates a direct visual connection between the ancient object and the historical person associated with it.
Coins shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included.
Ancient coins are individually shaped and may not be perfectly round, so small variations in fit can occur even when two coins have the same nominal diameter.
Looking for another Roman emperor, empress, Greek ruler or historical figure? Custom figures and different coin configurations can also be created for collectors looking for something specific.
