About this display
Display your coin alongside John II Komnenos, Eastern Roman emperor from 1118 to 1143 and one of the most important rulers of the Komnenian dynasty.
This full-body sculptural display is inspired by the Byzantine marble roundel catalogued as Roundel with Emperor John II Comnenus. Created in Constantinople around the early 12th century, the original shows a formally dressed emperor standing on a decorated ceremonial footstool and wearing richly ornamented imperial clothing.
The design has been reimagined as a three-dimensional coin display. The original orb and cross have been replaced with an open, waist-high palm designed to support a coin naturally. The staff has also been adapted with a simple rectangular ceremonial finial rather than a cross-shaped ornament.
Rather than placing a coin on a generic stand, Aurea Displays connects the displayed coin with the imperial art, clothing and history of the Eastern Roman Empire.
John II Komnenos was born in Constantinople in 1087 and ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 1118 until his death in 1143.
He was the second emperor of the Komnenian dynasty and continued the military and political recovery associated with the Komnenian restoration. His reign included campaigns in the Balkans, Anatolia, Cilicia and Syria, as well as major patronage of religious and charitable institutions in Constantinople.
The source roundel presents John in formal imperial attire, facing the viewer and standing on a decorated suppedion. Its composition emphasizes the emperor’s ceremonial authority through his crown, staff, jeweled clothing and frontal posture.
This sculpture preserves that commanding frontal presentation while adapting the figure for displaying a coin.
The integrated holder is built into the emperor’s open palm and is designed to display one coin.
It can accommodate coins with different diameters and thicknesses, including:
The display works particularly well with coins below approximately 38 mm for optimal visibility of the figure. Larger coins may fit but can cover more of the hand or surrounding costume.
For additional fit certainty, you may provide the diameter and thickness of your coin in the personalization field, especially when displaying an older, unusually thick or irregularly shaped piece.
This figure is based on a specific Byzantine imperial representation rather than a generic Roman or medieval character.
Details such as the frontal stance, rounded crown, jeweled loros, ceremonial clothing and imperial staff have been retained from the historical source. The orb and cross have intentionally been removed and replaced with an open palm for coin display.
The result is a historically inspired interpretation of John II Komnenos adapted for collectors who want their coin to become part of the sculpture itself.
The coin rests naturally on the integrated palm rather than being glued, clamped or permanently attached.
The design allows the coin to remain visible while forming part of the emperor’s ceremonial pose. The rounded crown, jeweled loros, geometric ornament and fabric folds are designed to remain readable at a compact display size.
The display works especially well with Byzantine and other ancient coins, but it can also be adapted for many modern coin sizes.
The coin shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.
Coin dimensions can vary between denominations, dates and historical issues. Please provide the diameter and thickness of your coin if you would like additional fit certainty.
Older coins may also vary because of wear, damage, casting differences or manufacturing tolerances. Minor differences in fit may therefore occur.
This sculpture is a historically inspired artistic interpretation and is not a museum reproduction or an exact portrait of John II Komnenos.

Other emperors, empresses, saints, historical figures and coin-inspired designs can also be developed as custom displays, with the holder adapted around the coin you would like to feature.
