About this display
Indian Princess Liberty bust inspired by James B. Longacre's portrait on the three-dollar gold piece, one of the rarest and most unusual American gold coins. A distinctive gift for gold coin collectors and lovers of American history.
The California Gold Rush flooded the United States with gold. In 1853 Congress authorized a new three-dollar coin, and the U.S. Mint's Chief Engraver, James Barton Longacre, was asked to design it. Longacre, who also created the Indian Head cent and the Liberty double eagle, gave Liberty a feathered headdress, turning her into a symbol of a distinctly American Liberty. Collectors have called her the Indian Princess ever since.
On the reverse, a wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco celebrated the crops of the North and the South. The coin was struck from 1854 to 1889 at Philadelphia, San Francisco and, for a single year, at Dahlonega and New Orleans. It never became popular in daily use, so mintages stayed small, and today every three-dollar gold piece is a prize in a collection of U.S. gold coins.
This bust brings Longacre's Indian Princess off the coin as a portrait sculpture for your shelf or coin cabinet, a reminder of the gold rush years and of nineteenth-century America.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
