About this display
Drummer boy statue inspired by Jack L. Ahr's colonial drummer on the 1776-1976 Bicentennial Washington quarter, a tribute to the American Revolution and the Spirit of '76. A memorable gift for coin collectors, history lovers and anyone proud of American independence.
In the Continental Army the drum was the voice of command. Drummers, many of them teenage boys, beat the signals that woke the camp, called the soldiers to arms and carried orders across the noise of battle. The young drummer became one of the lasting symbols of the fight for independence.
Two hundred years later, the United States celebrated its Bicentennial. In 1973 the Treasury opened a national competition for new reverse designs, and sculptor Jack L. Ahr's colonial drummer was chosen for the quarter. He placed a victory torch beside the drummer, surrounded by thirteen stars for the thirteen original colonies. The quarters were struck in 1975 and 1976, all carrying the double date 1776-1976, with George Washington on the obverse. Special 40% silver versions were also made for collectors.
Many Americans still find a Bicentennial quarter in their change today, and for many it was their first step into coin collecting. This statue brings Ahr's drummer boy off the coin as a freestanding sculpture.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
