About this display
Buffalo nickel bison statue inspired by James Earle Fraser's American bison on the Buffalo nickel, a symbol of the American West. A unique gift for coin collectors, wildlife lovers and anyone interested in American history.
Tens of millions of bison once crossed the Great Plains. By the end of the nineteenth century hunting had left only a few hundred in the wild, and Americans began to fight to save the animal that had come to stand for the frontier.
In 1913, as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's push to make American coins works of art, sculptor James Earle Fraser was asked to design a new five-cent piece. He had grown up on the Dakota frontier, and he chose the bison for the reverse. Tradition says his model was Black Diamond, a bison living at the Central Park Zoo in New York. On the obverse he placed a Native American portrait, so that one small coin told the story of the West.
The Buffalo nickel was struck from 1913 to 1938, and collectors still hunt for its famous varieties, such as the 1937-D three-legged buffalo. The design was loved so much that the U.S. Mint brought it back on the 2001 American Buffalo silver dollar and on the American Buffalo gold coin.
This statue brings Fraser's bison off the coin as a freestanding sculpture for your shelf, desk or coin cabinet.
This is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic coin design. It is not an official U.S. Mint product.
