About this display

A standalone bust of Nefertiti, based on the painted limestone and stucco bust in the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (ÄM 23100), displayed in the Neues Museum.

The original was found on 6 December 1912 in the sculptor’s workshop of Thutmose at Tell el-Amarna, during Ludwig Borchardt’s excavation, and later given to Berlin by James Simon. It dates to the Eighteenth Dynasty, around 1351–1334 BC. The tall blue crown with the uraeus band, the long neck, the collar and the famous unfinished left eye are the features of that Berlin bust. This model follows that real object as a 3D-printed interpretation, not an official museum replica.

Borchardt wrote that description was useless and the bust had to be seen. It remains the defining portrait of the Amarna queen.
