About this display

A standalone statue of the young Napoleon Bonaparte, based on Jacques-Louis David’s unfinished Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte as général en chef of the Army of Italy in the Musée du Louvre (RF 1942 18).

David began the canvas in the Louvre studio in December 1797 and January 1798 as a full-length portrait, with horse, suite and the Alps behind the general. The painting was later cut down to a bust; this figurine restores the standing figure that canvas was meant to be — long hair, open coat, sash and the lean pose of the Italian campaign. It is a 3D-printed interpretation of that real Louvre painting, not an official museum replica.

The portrait shows Bonaparte before the Consulate and the Empire, still the young commander of 1796–97.
