This coin display presents Oscar Roty’s La Semeuse: a woman in a Phrygian cap striding left, sowing seed into the wind, the reverse that defined the Third Republic’s silver from 1897. A coin platform sits on the base beside her so the piece becomes part of the composition.

LA SEMEUSE

Oscar Roty designed La Semeuse, the Sower, for the French silver of 1897. She walks into a rising sun, scattering seed from her apron, wearing a Phrygian cap and windblown drapery. The type appeared on the 50 centimes, 1 franc and 2 francs, and later returned on circulating francs and euro cents.

The silver 2 francs of this type measures about 27 mm. The 1 franc is about 23 mm; 50 centimes about 18 mm. Any of these can be displayed when their diameter and thickness are supplied.

This sculpture uses Roty’s reverse as the starting point for a full walking figure. The cap, seed-apron and drapery are an artistic interpretation created to complement the 1897 coin.
