About this display

A standalone statue of Napoleon I, based on Jacques-Louis David’s 1812 painting The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (1961.9.15).

David shows the emperor at four in the morning, after a night on the Napoleonic Code: hand tucked into the waistcoat, uniform with epaulettes and stars, rumpled stockings and the famous composed pose. This figurine translates that painted full-length portrait into three dimensions — the same stance, medals and cut of the coat — as a 3D-printed interpretation of a real artwork, not an official museum replica.

The original canvas is one of the defining images of Napoleonic myth-making: a tired legislator about to buckle on his sword, set against the study at the Tuileries.
